Have you ever tried brushing your teeth with your opposite hand? It’s difficult, and take a lot of focus, but that is what is necessary to do something you are not accustomed to doing. To move from a backward looking to a forward looking accountant, you have to actually focus and put in the effort.
Firm leaders also must instill confidence in their teams and firms to change as well. Like any behavior change, it’s not easy to learn new skills, especially soft skills that were not valued or taught previously, but moving the needle even just a little bit can make huge impacts. You don’t need to become the best, you just need to start moving forward and making little changes, which will make you a little bit better than the rest, and compound over time. There is one hack that can really help though: getting the right coach.
